GMNH Friends Field Trip:

Little St. Simons Island

June 10 - June 12 2011

Event Image

We'll be staying on the beautiful Little St. Simons Island, Georgia, Friday, June 10, 2011 to Sunday, June 12, 2011.

This is an all inclusive weekend adventure. Little St. Simons Island has been privately owned for 250 years, and changed very little during that time. The most recent owners, the Berolzheimer family, opened the island to a limited number of overnight guests in 1979. This small, quaint and relaxed resort is a nature lovers delight. While on the island, we will be staying in guest cottages, and dining at the Berolzheimer's Lodge.

This pristine island is host to a wide variety of coastal birds and animals. Beach shuttles, bicycles, kayaks and canoes are available for your use exploring the island; and island Naturalists will be on hand to aid you with your explorations. On the Friends last visit, in winter, we viewed nesting Bald Eagles and Great Horned Owls. During our spring trip we may see baby armadillos and rabbits, snowy and great egret chicks, shorebird chicks, and turtles nesting at night on the beach! Birding in at this time should also be good. You may see Willet, Osprey, Wood Stork, White and Glossy Ibis, Painted Bunting, Reddish Egret, Bald Eagle, American Oystercatcher, Belted Kingfisher, Black Skimmer, Roseate Spoonbill and more.

The trip is limited to 32 people, so get your reservation in soon!
